Wellington School has existed on its original site on the southern side of this ancient Somerset town for over 150 years, serving its community and nowadays a wider worldwide field. Wellington School is an academically selective school, offering day and boarding co-education to 780 children, aged 10 - 18. With excellent examination results, thriving music and drama departments and a wide range of sporting and other activities, Wellington School is a happy, caring community, which offers exceptional value for money.
This last decade has been an interesting time for it has added ú5,000,000 of buildings, two of which have earned Civic and National Architectural Award. The ú2,000,000 Science Block contains the most modern equipment in the West Country.
Academically, Wellington School's pupils have produced a consistently high level of achievement for examinations for both GCSE and A level. On average 90 - 95% of the School's sixth form go on to university.
In 1996 the GCSE pass rate at the School, grades A to C, was 93%, 45% of which were grade A or A*. The pass rate at 'A' level for the same year was 94% with 51% at A and B grades.
Making the grade at A Level will secure a place at a good university. Although getting to university is easier than it was, getting to the right university if more difficult. Wellington School staff spend time and effort helping pupils to secure a place on a good degree course suitable to each individual. This year eight Sixth Form Pupils have achieved provisional Oxbridge places, six have been awarded Army Scholarships (out of only 45 available nationally) and two have been awarded RAF Scholarships.
Just as important to the School as academic achievement is the high emphasis put on the easy relationship between pupils and staff and a positive and supportive atmosphere where individual development is maintained.
Music, drama and sport form a major part of activity and pupils are encouraged to participate in clubs, societies, the Combined Cadet Force or the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme; all of which are highly popular. Spiritual needs are met in daily chapel services where the majority of pupils the opportunity for contemplation.
